Yearbook
Although Yearbook is an elective class that meets during the regular school day, many of their activities are carried out after school. Students record the year’s events through written and pictorial essays assembled into an annual for students to purchase. Students learn about the publishing process, digital imaging, budgeting and marketing. Students attend after school events to take pictures and also to take yearbook orders.
Service Learning
Students who are in Service Learning meet during the school day and choose, plan and carry out service experiences that meet actual community needs. Service Learning students also act as the Utterback Student Council and are responsible for school dances, carnivals and Spirit Week. In the past these students have also organized canned food drives, natural disaster relief funds, read to students at elementary schools and helped local charity organizations.
Tutoring
After school tutoring is available for students who need extra time or support to understand the concepts that are being taught in most classes.
MESA Club
The Math , Engineering, Science Achievement Club is for all students interested in fun, hands on activities that also increase understanding of scientific concepts. MESA clubs are partnered with the University of Arizona. Students compete at local, state and national levels.
National Junior Honor Society
Eighth grade students inducted to NJHS have demonstrated high academic achievement during their 6th and 7th grade years. Meetings are held during the school day, with some activities planned for after school.
Peer Mediation
Peer mediators provide opportunities for other students to resolve their conflicts in a non-threatening environment without administrators or fear of discipline. 7th and 8th graders receive training in techniques and strategies that allow them to mediate in conflict situations and to learn and apply skills that will benefit them throughout their lives. See counselors for information on how to become a Peer Mediator.
Tax Credit
Many of our extra curricular activities are funded through the State Tax Credit program. Monies are used for field trips, costumes, uniforms, guest artists and other equipment and activities that make learning meaningful and applicable to student life. To make a tax credit donation come to Utterback or mail in the form or donate online at http://tusd1.org/contents/distinfo/aztaxcredit/index.html.
