El Tour de Tucson Math Project

Cynthia, Kyle, Serina

- Mr. Lambert, Ella, Samaria, Selina, Ayla, Ms. St. Louis
Will Math help the Utterback riders finish El Tour de Tucson? The students in Ms. St. Louis’s math class found out that it did. Each math class had students who committed to ride in the 40 mile bike race, with the help of their classmates. The students who were not riding formed physical training companies and became coaches to the riders. They had to figure out training routines based on heart rate, nutritional analysis, rate of progress and time and to use their math skills to do it. They learned linear equations by seeing how far the riders would go in a certain amount of time. Students who weren’t riding worked as volunteers at the finish line and helped exhausted riders get water and food.
